With around 70% of consumers buying or selling used tech in 2023, the second-hand tech market is booming — expected to hit $2.7 trillion by 2025. But that doesn’t mean every used deal is a good one. Before you pull the trigger on a used phone, laptop, or tablet, here are eight things you should always check.
1. Is the Device Still Supported?
This one’s a deal-breaker. If the device doesn’t get software updates anymore, it’s not worth the risk. No updates = no security patches = easy target for hackers.
Always check the manufacturer’s website to see if the model is still supported. If not, you’re better off skipping it. This is especially important for anyone using devices in business settings — or anyone relying on them daily. 2. Device Age
Age matters. An older device might work okay now, but how will it perform six months from now?
Look up when the device was originally released. If it’s already 4–5 years old, performance will probably be hit-or-miss. Compare it to newer models and see if it still stacks up for what you need — whether that’s emails, Zoom calls, or gaming.
3. Battery Health
Batteries wear out over time, and replacing them isn’t always cheap.
Try to get battery health info from the seller — especially for phones and laptops. If the battery’s on its last legs, add the replacement cost to your total. In some cases, it might push the price too close to what you’d pay for something new with a warranty.
4. Any Apparent Damage?
Check for cracks, dents, discoloration, or signs of water damage. Cosmetic damage might not seem like a big deal, but it could mean the device took a hit — or worse, it’s hiding internal problems.

5. Are All Accessories Included?
Cables, chargers, dongles — make sure you’re getting the full setup. Buying missing accessories later can add up fast.

6. What’s the Return Policy?
You need some kind of safety net.
If you’re buying from a store or marketplace, check their return or warranty policy. No returns? High risk. Even short return windows give you time to test things properly.
7. What’s the Cost Compared to New?
Sometimes the price gap between used and new just isn’t worth it.
Always compare with other used listings and new devices. If the used model costs only slightly less than a brand-new one with a full warranty, it might not be the smart play. Price check across platforms and sellers — it only takes a few minutes but can save you heaps.
8. Can You Test It First?
Trying before buying is a game changer.
If you’re meeting a seller in person, always test the device. Power it up, connect to Wi-Fi, check the ports and screen, and try the battery. If you’re buying online, ask for a detailed video walkthrough. No video or photos? Probably a red flag.
